the Lagos State Government has initiated the demolition of illegal structures, shanties, and unapproved buildings in Ikeja Government Reserved Area (GRA). This action was taken in response to security concerns and violations of urban planning regulations.
Led by Gbolahan Oki, the Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA), the operation targeted areas such as Michael Otedola, Sowemimo, Remi Fani-Kayode, and Ajisafe Streets. The demolition focused on makeshift stalls and structures that either lacked proper approval or had been illegally modified beyond their original plans.
Oki highlighted that while some property owners had valid building approvals, many had altered their properties, turning four approved flats into eight, or converting approved duplexes into more units, which strained local infrastructure. He emphasized that such actions disrupted the urban planning of Ikeja GRA, stressing that the area should not become as overcrowded as Ajegunle.
The demolition followed a thorough process, including previous notifications to property owners, requesting building approvals for verification. Oki explained that the exercise aimed to remove unauthorized structures linked to illegal activities, thereby restoring safety and proper urban planning.
He also pointed out the heightened security risks and challenges to effective surveillance posed by illegal developments. The government has warned that the demolition drive will extend to other areas of Lagos as part of efforts to improve urban safety and livability.
