The Lagos State Government has commenced the demolition of unapproved buildings across the state following the expiration of an amnesty period granted to property owners to regularize their documents.
The enforcement exercise, led by the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA), kicked off in Ogudu GRA, where officials took action against structures that violated the state’s urban planning regulations. The amnesty period, which was initially extended until December 31, 2024, has now elapsed, prompting the government to begin removals.
According to LASBCA’s Permanent Secretary, Arc. Gbolahan Owodunni Oki, the exercise aims to restore order to Lagos’ physical planning landscape and prevent the dangers associated with unregulated developments, including building collapses. He emphasized that the government had issued multiple notices to affected property owners before taking this final enforcement step.
“Unfortunately, some residents have refused to comply, and the agency has no option but to enforce actions to reclaim public spaces and prevent building collapses,” Oki stated.
The demolition drive is expected to extend to other parts of the state as the government intensifies efforts to rid Lagos of unapproved structures and maintain environmental standards. Property owners and developers have been urged to adhere strictly to building regulations to avoid similar enforcement actions in the future.
LASBCA assured that all affected buildings had been marked and served notices well in advance, giving property owners ample time to comply with regulatory requirements. The agency reiterated its commitment to ensuring a well-structured and safe urban environment in line with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s developmental agenda.
