The Lagos State Government has sealed off a residential building at 12 Alfred Williams Street, Iju Station, which had been illegally converted into an abattoir. The move, part of the state’s ongoing zero-tolerance enforcement against unhygienic practices, also led to the arrest of the 70-year-old property owner and two others.
This latest enforcement action comes just four days after the state government shut down the Oko-Oba Abattoir in Agege over similar health concerns.
Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, confirmed the development on Monday. He stated that investigations revealed the arrested property owner had turned his residence into a slaughterhouse following the closure of the Oko-Oba facility. This act, he said, not only flouted government directives but also posed a serious health threat to the surrounding community.
Wahab condemned the move as an attempt to sidestep lawful procedures for personal gain, stressing that the state would not tolerate such behavior.
In a related development, the Lagos State Government is exploring sustainable urban interventions through a proposed collaboration with the African Cities Research Consortium (ACRC). The partnership aims to tackle infrastructural and environmental challenges facing the fast-growing metropolis.
