The Lagos State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to the ongoing renewal of infrastructure on Lagos Island, focusing on urban regeneration to address flooding and improve the area’s overall infrastructure.
The Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, led an inspection team on Sunday to evaluate the alignments for drains and collectors set to be reconstructed. He emphasized the urgency of the project, noting that the urban renewal initiative is essential for tackling flooding, which has posed significant risks to lives and properties on Lagos Island.
Wahab highlighted the re-award of the project under Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration, aiming to complete the project in 18 months rather than the initial 24-month timeline.
He underscored the importance of collaboration between the government and residents, emphasizing that taxpayers’ money funds these developments, and residents must take ownership to maintain the infrastructure. The Special Adviser to the Governor on Environment, Olakunle Rotimi-Akodu, reiterated the government’s dedication to providing a flood-free and clean environment.
He described the regeneration project as a long-term solution to flooding and assured residents that the government remains steadfast in fulfilling its environmental responsibilities.
