The Lagos State Government has issued a stern warning to residents of government-owned estates, urging them to adhere to the maintenance standards outlined in their allocation letters. The government is increasingly concerned about a growing disregard for estate regulations, which it states undermines the functionality and sustainability of shared infrastructure.
Recent reports to the Ministry of Housing have highlighted various infractions, including energy theft, neglect of shared facilities, and failure to pay statutory estate dues. These violations not only compromise living conditions but also pose risks to residents and the integrity of the estate infrastructure.
Commissioner for Housing, Mr. Moruf Akinderu-Fatai, delivered this warning following an enforcement exercise at the Lateef Kayode Jakande Estate in Igando, where residents were found engaging in energy theft. Many occupants had bypassed their electrical connections, effectively stealing electricity in violation of regulations.
Akinderu-Fatai condemned the practice, stressing that the government would not tolerate sabotage of essential infrastructure. He stated, “The Ministry of Housing will not accept situations where residents choose to bypass and abandon existing infrastructure such as the water system, electricity, and other shared services.”
He also criticized residents who tampered with apartments previously sealed due to regulatory breaches, warning that such actions would have severe consequences. While some residents pleaded for leniency, he emphasized that violations would no longer be tolerated.
The Commissioner reminded residents that all government-owned estates are equipped with necessary facilities for comfortable living. However, they are responsible for the upkeep through facility managers appointed by the state government. He urged allottees to support resident representatives in their efforts to maintain shared amenities.
“These estates were created to provide decent and structured living environments. Adherence to the rules is crucial for maintaining the quality and sustainability of these communities,” Akinderu-Fatai added.
The Lagos State Government reaffirmed its commitment to enforcing compliance and ensuring that government-owned estates remain orderly, functional, and conducive for all residents.
