The Lagos State government has announced that the enforcement of the ban on single-use plastics (SUPs) will commence in 14 days.
Tokunbo Wahab, the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, disclosed this during an inspection of flood-prone areas and infrastructure projects on Lagos Island, including the Ilubirin Waterfront.
The ban, initially announced in December 2024, prohibits the use of materials like Styrofoam for packaging. This is part of the state’s broader strategy to address the environmental hazards caused by plastic waste.
Wahab noted that since the earlier enforcement on Styrofoam in January 2024, there has been a noticeable reduction in related litter across the state. “The enforcement will start before the end of January,” he affirmed, reiterating the government’s commitment to phasing out SUPs entirely.
He also emphasized the importance of inspecting ongoing drainage and infrastructure projects to ensure they meet deadlines and contribute to mitigating flooding on Lagos Island.
This initiative aligns with the government’s efforts to regenerate infrastructure in Lagos and promote sustainable environmental practices.
