The Lagos State Government has warned that it may close the Oko-Oba abattoir in Agege due to unhygienic practices and environmental infractions. Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, issued the warning during an inspection of the facility, citing persistent non-compliance with environmental laws.

Wahab expressed deep concern over the deplorable conditions, noting that the abattoir has become a lawless zone with people sleeping in animal shelters and waste being discharged directly into public drainage. He stated that the facility, which should adhere to basic hygiene and waste management standards, has instead become a breeding ground for health hazards.

The government has given the operators a specific period to comply with environmental laws, after which the facility will be sealed. The Commissioner also urged butchers and meat sellers to adhere to established benchmarks or face sanctions, emphasizing that public health is at risk.

In addition, Wahab addressed the issue of potential flash floods in Lagos, assuring that measures are in place to reduce flooding during rainfalls. He urged residents to refrain from dumping refuse in canals and drainage channels to ensure the free flow of storm water.
