According to the Lagos State government, 82 people lost their lives and N25.37 billion worth of property was damaged in fire incidents that occurred in the state over the previous year.
The Commissioner for Special Duties and Intergovernmental Relations, Gbenga Oyerinde, made the disclosure at the ongoing Ministerial Press Briefing, which is being held in Alausa, Ikeja, Lagos, to mark the one anniversary of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s second term in office.
He said that throughout the same time frame, 376 people were successfully rescued by fire safety personnel from the State Emergency and Fire Rescue agency, protecting property estimated to be worth N152.22 billion.
Additionally, Oyerinde stated that the state administration has closed over 840 social and event centres this year because of safety infractions and breaking existing rules.
Oyerinde highlighted the accomplishments of the ministry and said that, in order to resolve safety violations and guarantee public safety, the Lagos State Safety Commission carried out enforcement operations at 840 locations, including nightclubs, lounges, hotels, and construction sites.
“376 people were successfully evacuated by fire safety officers from the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), protecting property estimated to be worth N152.22 billion. Regretfully, N25.37 billion worth of property was lost, and the ministry reported 82 casualties,” Oyerinde stated.
