In a tragic incident, at least 32 cows were reportedly killed by lightning in the Osara area of Obantoko, Abeokuta, within the Odeda Local Government Area of Ogun State during a heavy rainfall on Saturday.
According to Wasiu Afolabi, the Baale of Osara, the event occurred around noon, and he was alerted by the Fulani herders responsible for the cows at approximately 2 PM.
Afolabi explained that he visited the site where the cows were kept before grazing and confirmed the unfortunate event. He noted that he has reported the incident to the Aregbe police division and Dr. Afolashade Adeyemo, the Chairman of Odeda Local Government.
“We have scheduled a meeting this morning with the Fulani to discuss the next steps and ensure that this incident does not disrupt the peace of the community,” Afolabi added.
Commissioner of Police Lanre Ogunlowo also confirmed the incident via a WhatsApp message, stating that the command is aware of the situation. He noted that the DPO of Aregbe Division was informed and led a team to the scene after the report was received around 1:30 PM on June 21, 2025.
This unusual incident has raised concerns in the local community, prompting discussions on how to address the aftermath and maintain harmony.
