A major fire outbreak has ravaged the second-hand clothing section of the Jos Main Market in Plateau State, causing the destruction of properties valued at millions of naira. The inferno reportedly began at around 1:30 a.m. while residents were asleep.

Despite the intervention of the Plateau State Fire Service and community members, several shops and goods were completely destroyed. The Chairman of the Jos Main Market Association, Mustapha Ibrahim, attributed the fire to a suspected power surge.

In reaction, the Plateau State Government expressed deep sorrow over the incident. Commissioner for Information and Communication, Hon. Joyce Lohya Ramnap, described the fire as a devastating economic loss and praised the swift action of firefighters and volunteers.

She urged all market stakeholders to prioritize safety, maintain peace despite the hardship caused by the blaze, and collaborate to prevent future incidents. Governor Caleb Mutfwang has reportedly mobilized a team to investigate the cause of the fire and has pledged government support to affected traders.
