The Niger State government has reported that more than 700 individuals remain missing following devastating floods in Mokwa Community. Governor Umaru Bago disclosed these figures during a condolence visit from Maj. Hamza Al-Mustapha, expressing deep concern about the situation.
As of now, 207 fatalities have been confirmed, and over 3,000 households have been displaced. The flooding has caused severe damage, with 400 houses affected and 283 completely destroyed.
Governor Bago, represented by Deputy Governor Yakubu Garba, acknowledged the support from both individuals and organizations, emphasizing that this incident is a national disaster. Efforts are underway to determine the flood’s root causes and assess the damage.
Al-Mustapha’s delegation, comprising notable figures from around the country, aimed to offer sympathy and support, with plans to engage the traditional council on future prevention strategies and improved living conditions.
The governor also mentioned that many flood victims are non-indigenes, affecting community dynamics significantly. Documentation for aid distribution is in progress, with each affected family expected to receive at least N1 million in support.
