The North East Development Commission (NEDC) has said it is planning to establish a waste recycling plant for the six northeastern states to combat climate change in the region.

Dr Zainab Mohammed Challube, the Commission’s consultant and Coordinator of the Waste Management and Recycling Programme stated this on Monday in Maiduguri at a training organised by the commission.

“The proposal for the establishment of the plant is already on the table. So, the commission is refining the proposal to facilitate actualisation,” she said.

Challube said the training would help the beneficiaries pick up their lives shattered by the Boko Haram insurgency in the region.

She said the North East has a long history of environmental degradation, hence the need for the commission to look into the causative factors while developing the skills of people to mitigate such challenges.

Zainab further explained that the commission would expand recycling and composting services through the blanket knowledge of all recyclable waste materials such as disposable plastic containers, plastic bottles, and polythene bags.

She said at the end of the five-day training, the participants would learn how to convert the waste into usable materials, such as interlocks, adhesives, and other related usable items.
