The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has issued a stern warning to the public to avoid bush burning during the harmattan season, emphasizing the potential for property damage and loss of life.
Ojuedene Kenoma, NEMA’s Head of Operations in Edo State, delivered this message at a workshop aimed at training local government officials and volunteers in disaster prevention, response, and control measures.
Kenoma highlighted the importance of preparedness, particularly during harmattan when bush burning is common. “Disasters such as tanker accidents and fire outbreaks can occur unexpectedly. It is essential to cultivate a culture of awareness and effective response, especially at the grassroots level,” he stated.
The workshop was designed to empower communities with the necessary skills and knowledge to tackle disasters proactively. Kenoma noted that the volunteers trained at the event would play a crucial role in disseminating fire prevention and emergency response information to their local communities.
Superintendent Asimu Sumaila from the Federal Fire Service emphasized that negligence is responsible for 80% of fire incidents. He urged individuals to take responsibility for fire safety, recommending the proper use of fire extinguishers and adherence to safety guidelines to minimize risks.
As the harmattan season continues, NEMA’s warning serves as a vital reminder for the public to prioritize safety and preparedness in their communities.
