An engineer named Joseph O. Akinteye has taken the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) and three other parties to court, requesting an injunction to prevent the NSE from swearing in a new president come January 2024. This action has sparked a crisis in the Nigerian engineering sector.

In a lawsuit filed at the FCT High Court, Gwagwalada Division on November 24, 2023, under suit number CV/158/21, Joseph O. Akinteye is also requesting an injunction to prevent NSE and the other three defendants—Engineers Emeka Eze, C. Mbanefo, and Mrs. Magaret A. Oguntala—from conducting the 2023 elections slated on 29th and 30th November until the suit’s outcome is known.

In addition, the claimant, Engineer Akinteye, is requesting a court order to prevent Mrs. Oguntala from parading as the NSE’s deputy president and from being officially inaugurated as the organization’s president in January 2024.

In order to prevent a leadership vacancy at NSE while the lawsuit is being decided, the suit also requests that NSE appoint a caretaker committee.

The dates of the NSE AGM/Conference are set for Monday, December 29–December 1, 2023. Since its election on December 9, 2021, the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), which serves as the apex body for the engineering profession in Nigeria, has been embroiled in a scandal involving elections for its executive branch.

The NSE’s most recent president, Babagana Mohammed, cancelled the 2021 election due to a purported “criminal cyber breach.” It has been reported that some individuals attempted to rig the election results by hacking the organization’s database.

Engr. Tasiu Sa’ad Gidari-Wudil, the association’s 33rd President, succeeded his predecessor Engr. Babagana Mohammed as NSE President, taking over the affairs of the Society.
