According to the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), early downpour is predicted for the states of Borno, Abia, and Akwa Ibom in 2024.
This was disclosed by Festus Keyamo, the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, during the public 2024 Seasonal Climate Prediction (SCP) presentation, which NiMet hosted on Tuesday in Abuja under the theme, “Facilitating a weather resilient economy through early warnings for all to foster renewed hope and sustainable development.”
According to Keyamo, the states of Borno, Abia, and Akwa Ibom are expected to see an early start in comparison to their long-term norms. Additionally, the season is expected to conclude early in some areas of the states of Yobe, Jigawa, Sokoto, Kebbi, Kano, Kaduna, Plateau, Nasarawa Taraba, Gombe, Bauchi, Cross River, Ebonyi, Ogun, and Lagos.
Keyamo said that, in comparison to their long-term average, the annual rainfall quantity was expected to be below normal over portions of the states of Yobe, Jigawa, Bauchi, Kano, Kebbi, Gombe, Plateau, Taraba, Nasarawa, Benue, Enugu, Ebonyi, Cross River, Delta, and Bayelsa.
The season is predicted to be shorter in the majority of the nation. When compared to their mean, Bayelsa, Rivers, and Akwa Ibom are probably going to have a lengthier season. In other sections of the nation, season durations will probably range from normal to shorter.
Prof. Charles Anosike, the Permanent Representative of Nigeria at the World Meteorological Organisation and Director General of NiMet, stated earlier in his speech that the organisation is dedicated to “Facilitating a weather-resilient economy through early warnings for all to foster renewed hope and sustainable development which is at the forefront of planning and economic agenda.”
