Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State has implemented a 50% waiver on penalties for property owners lacking necessary building permits. This three-month amnesty, effective from November 2025 to January 2026, aims to encourage compliance with the state’s Urban and Regional Planning and Development Law.
During a press briefing, the Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Tunji Odunlami, announced that many property owners have developed properties without securing legal permits. Recognizing the economic challenges citizens face as the year concludes, the government has decided to reduce penalties significantly.
Odunlami stated, “This window provides an opportunity for those who have built without permits to regularise their developments and enjoy a 50% reduction in applicable fees.” The amnesty applies to all types of developments, including residential and commercial projects.
Additionally, the state will initiate the demolition of illegal shanties along major highways to improve safety and urban aesthetics. Odunlami described these unauthorized structures as problematic for visibility and drainage, exacerbating environmental issues.
He urged property owners to visit the ministry’s offices for assistance in regularizing their developments and stressed that unauthorized use of setback areas will be met with strict enforcement measures, including potential withdrawal of planning permits.
