The Ogun State Government has taken decisive action by sealing the popular Adatan market in Abeokuta due to environmental infractions and illegal roadside trading. Farouk Akintunde, the Special Adviser to Governor Dapo Abiodun on Environmental Protection, announced the closure, citing traders’ indiscriminate dumping of refuse into drainage channels and obstructing walkways.
Akintunde emphasized the government’s zero tolerance for environmental pollution and reiterated the necessity for traders to maintain the drainage systems in front of their shops to prevent flooding. He also noted that every Thursday has been designated for sanitation activities across all markets in the state.
The enforcement action follows several months of warnings to market traders, which were largely ignored. Alongside the market closure, Alaga Restaurant and Sintinatti Bar, both located in Abeokuta, were also sealed for poor management of wastewater.
This move aligns with recent actions in other states, including the closure of the Lafia Modern Market in Nasarawa and Itedo Market in Lagos, highlighting an increasing focus on environmental compliance across Nigeria. The Ogun State government aims to ensure a cleaner and safer environment for its residents.
