The Nigerian Institute of Town Planners (NITP), Ogun State Chapter, has called for urgent action to address the challenges posed by rapid population growth in various communities without corresponding infrastructure improvements.

During their August monthly meeting at the Federal Polytechnic, Ilaro, NITP State Chairman Adefela Sogbesan highlighted regions like Ilaro and Ibese, which are experiencing significant population increases, largely due to the presence of major industries such as Dangote Cement.

Sogbesan warned that this demographic surge is creating alarming implications for housing, transportation, drainage, education, and healthcare. He emphasized the need for partnerships with the state government and relevant stakeholders to tackle these pressing issues.

The meeting included a courtesy visit to the Federal Polytechnic, where Deputy Rector Lukman Lasisi underscored the importance of town planning in creating livable environments. He also sought assistance from the NITP regarding a flooding issue caused by a blocked culvert near the campus.

In discussions, Sogbesan stressed the integration of climate science and urban governance in contemporary town planning, advocating for collaborative research and sustainable urbanism projects. The NITP also visited the Chairman of Yewa South Local Government, Hon. Abraham Ogunsola, to align their initiatives with the council’s development plans.

Members discussed internal matters, including the postponement of elections and preparations for their Annual General Meeting. They also raised funds for the completion of the NITP-OG building, with significant contributions from members.
