The Ondo State chapter of the Nigerian Institution of Surveyors has sharply criticized the state government for its inadequate response to security threats following the kidnapping of nine surveyors in the Ilu Abo community, located in the Akure North Local Government Area. The surveyors were abducted last week while working on a project site.
The alarming incident has sparked protests across Akure, where citizens, particularly women, rallied to demand immediate government action. Fortunately, the abducted surveyors were released shortly after the demonstration.
Speaking to reporters in Akure, Kayode Bello, the Chairman of the Ondo NIS, condemned the government’s slow approach to addressing security issues, calling for a more proactive stance rather than a reactionary one. “Swift intervention is needed to ensure the safe return of any kidnapped citizens. The government must take decisive action on security,” Bello stated.
Bello also criticized remarks made by Bola Taiwo, Special Adviser to Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, who suggested that the victims should have hired private security for their safety. He deemed this statement as insensitive and misplaced, asserting that surveyors typically do not conduct fieldwork with security escorts.
Bello expressed disappointment over the recurring security lapses in Ondo State, stressing that it is the government’s responsibility to ensure the safety of its citizens rather than placing the blame on individuals. “Rather than shifting blame to victims, the government must focus on making Ondo State safer for all,” he asserted.
In light of Taiwo’s comments, the NIS has demanded that he retract his statement within 48 hours and insisted that the state government take urgent measures to enhance security in the region, calling for accountability and immediate action to prevent future incidents.
As the situation unfolds, the attention remains on how the government will respond to these calls for improved security and the welfare of its citizens.
