A renewed boundary dispute between the Ikenga and Isiokwe communities in Anambra East Local Government Area has resulted in the tragic death of one individual and significant property damage. The clash, which occurred on March 16, 2025, has drawn the attention of local law enforcement, prompting calls for conflict resolution.
According to a statement from the Anambra Police Public Relations Officer, Tochukwu Ikenga, the incident involved violent confrontations that led to the murder and destruction of homes and businesses. The state Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Ortugu, has since sought to mediate the situation through alternative dispute resolution mechanisms, inviting representatives from both communities to a meeting.
Ikenga reported that during the meeting held in Awka on March 18, the Commissioner urged the communities to cooperate with the police in identifying the suspects involved in the violence. “The CP is seeking to explore Alternative Dispute Resolutions to the case and seeks the cooperation of the communities to identify the suspects involved and ensure justice is served,” Ikenga stated.
Both communities have reportedly agreed to settle their differences amicably and have expressed a willingness to collaborate on future government interventions regarding boundary issues. The Commissioner of Police extended his condolences to the family of the deceased and emphasized the importance of peaceful resolutions rather than resorting to violence.
In a related note, the CP encouraged the communities to establish a committee to visit the bereaved family and support victims whose properties were destroyed during the conflict. He also advised both communities to appeal to the government for boundary adjustments whenever necessary, aiming to foster a culture of peace and reconciliation.
This incident is not isolated; it follows a similar violent clash in September 2024, where four individuals were killed in the Agu-Isioye community over a boundary dispute. Such incidents have raised concerns about the ongoing tensions in the region, highlighting the need for effective conflict resolution strategies.
As the Anambra State government addresses these disputes, the focus remains on fostering dialogue and cooperation between communities to prevent further violence and promote lasting peace.
