Al-amin Abubakar —

Nigerian President, Muhammadu Buhari last Tuesday at the official groundbreaking ceremonies for the Oloibiri Museum and Research Centre (OMRC) and the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB) conference hotel projects in Otuabagi and Swali communities in the Ogbia and Yenagoa Local Government Areas, respectively, directed the contractors handling the OMRC and the NCDMB Conference Hotel projects to ensure the host communities, their traditional institutions and other stakeholders are carried along in the execution of the two projects.

Buhari, who also commissioned the NCDMB Crèche/ Daycare Centre and Fire Station Building, in Yenagoa, urged the contractors to also build capacities to ensure smooth project delivery.

The OMRC project is a public-private partnership promoted by the Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF), the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB), the Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria Limited (SPDC) and the Bayelsa State Government, while the NCDMB Conference Hotel project was awarded to Megastar Technical and Construction Company Limited and sponsored by the NCDMB.

Represented by the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Timipre Sylva, the President also said he expects the handlers of the projects to build capacities where necessary to “ensure hitch free project delivery”.

“I hereby direct the lead contractors of both projects, Julius Berger Nigeria Plc and Megastar Technical and Construction Company Limited, alongside other contractors to integrate the host communities, their traditional institutions, vendors and skilled youths in the various scopes of the project. I also expect that you will build capacities where necessary to ensure hitch free project delivery, the President said.

“Specifically, I recommend that the contractors should study the Community Content Guideline Document issued by the NCDMB to help them navigate that part of their operations.

President Buhari further advised the host communities to see the projects as their own and protect them from any form of disturbances while ensuring collaboration with the contractors.

”By starting work on the Oloibiri Museum and Research Centre (OMRC), we have taken a giant step towards correcting a historical oversight by erecting a befitting monument at the exact ground of Oloibiri Oilfield where commercial quantities of oil were first discovered in Nigeria and production began in 1957, Buhari stated.

“These projects will positively impact the socio-economic landscape of Bayelsa State and the nation at large through job creation, capacity building and opportunity for local businesses in the construction value chain and linkage sectors and it is imperative that they get all the required support”.
