A severe rainstorm struck Ijagbo in the Oyun Local Government Area of Kwara State on Monday, leaving over 100 residents homeless and causing extensive damage to various structures, including educational institutions. The storm particularly impacted Ansar-Udeen College, where more than ten classrooms were affected, disrupting academic activities.

The storm, which hit around 4 p.m., resulted in roofs being blown off buildings, leading to the exposure of classrooms and damage to essential learning materials. School principals Olaniyi Musbaudeen and Saheed A.M. urgently called on Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq for immediate assistance to restore the damaged infrastructure.

Musbaudeen expressed concern, stating, “The destruction of these classrooms poses a serious threat to our students’ education. We urgently need the government’s support to rebuild.” Saheed echoed these sentiments, emphasizing that delays in reconstruction could have long-lasting consequences on students’ academic progress.

In response to the disaster, the State Commissioner for Education and Human Capital Development, Lawal Olohungbebe, visited the affected school on Wednesday. He conveyed the governor’s commitment to a quick response to restore the damaged facilities and encouraged the school management to provide a list of the property losses for immediate repairs.

Olohungbebe assured the school that the government would address staffing shortages to ensure the continuity of academic activities in a conducive learning environment. The commissioner conducted a thorough assessment of the damage and engaged with the school leadership to determine their immediate needs.

The Kwara State Government’s commitment to addressing these issues reflects its dedication to ensuring that educational institutions remain functional and meet the needs of their communities despite natural adversities.
