A fire at a private hospital in southern India has resulted in the deaths of at least six individuals, with over two dozen others injured, according to police reports on Friday.

Fires in buildings are a frequent issue in India, often attributed to inadequate firefighting equipment and a general disregard for safety regulations. The blaze erupted late Thursday night in Tamil Nadu, and authorities are currently investigating its cause.

All six victims were discovered unconscious in a hospital elevator in the city of Dindigul, as reported by the Press Trust of India. Police superintendent A. Pradeep stated that approximately 30 people were injured in the incident, but their conditions are stable.

The fire originated in the reception area on the ground floor and quickly spread to upper levels, according to the Times of India.

This incident follows a tragic event just weeks prior, when a fire in a northern Uttar Pradesh hospital claimed the lives of 10 newborns. Earlier this year, a similar fire at a children’s hospital in New Delhi also resulted in the deaths of six infants. Additionally, a fire at a crowded amusement park arcade in Gujarat in May led to the deaths of at least 27 people, including several children.
