The Zuba Junction, located where the Outer Northern Expressway (ONEX) meets the A-2 highway, is notorious for its chaotic traffic conditions. This junction serves as a critical link for heavy road traffic between Abuja, Kaduna, and Kano, while also accommodating commuters from Suleja. Originally, the Trunk A-234 connected the former Abuja (now Suleja) to Keffi, but the Abuja Master Plan led to the realignment of this route, creating the ONEX. The Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) took over the construction and maintenance responsibilities, while the Federal Ministry of Works handled the A-2 and remaining sections of the A-234. Unfortunately, the quality of work on the A-2 has been criticized in comparison to the ONEX.

The Zuba Junction’s traffic congestion intensifies due to several factors. Heavy traffic from the ONEX and the A-2 handles substantial volumes, especially during peak hours. Potholes and poor road conditions cause delays, with vehicles often breaking down at the junction. The presence of informal motor parks within the cloverleaf design complicates traffic flow, as commercial motorists frequently stop to pick up and drop off passengers. The nearby Madallah Market exacerbates congestion, particularly on Thursdays, where traffic can back up for kilometers. Ongoing road construction has improved road quality but has also slowed traffic flow, compounding existing issues.

The chaos at Zuba Junction significantly affects commuters, particularly on Thursdays when traffic conditions are at their worst. Many workers face the risk of job loss as they struggle to reach their destinations on time. The combination of gridlock and construction has overwhelmed traffic control efforts, making the situation increasingly dire. Immediate action is needed from the Federal Ministry of Works to expedite construction at Zuba Junction. Addressing the traffic chaos is crucial for easing the daily struggles of commuters and ensuring safer travel through this vital intersection.
