The Federal Government has pledged to finish repair work on three major Lagos bridges by the end of the year. This promise was made during an inspection of the lagoon sections of the Third Mainland, Carter, and Eko Bridges by the Minister of Works, Mr. David Umahi, and the Coordinating Minister of Finance and the Economy, Mr. Wale Edun. The ministers, along with top directors and contractors from the Federal Ministry of Works, spent nearly two hours in boats passing beneath the bridges. Last week, the federal government closed the Lagos Island section of the Third Mainland Bridge, which is the longest bridge connecting the Lagos Mainland to the Island.

The ministers inspected the portions of the lagoon before moving on land to examine the Carter Bridge’s underdeck and the Eko Bridge’s Ijora segment.

Subsequently, they conducted an inspection of the Lagos-Ibadan Motorway and the ongoing restoration of the Lotto Junction flyover.

In an interview with reporters, Umahi stated that the purpose of the joint review was to provide his counterparts in Finance and Economy with personal knowledge of the projects and their associated costs.

According to Umahi, President Bola Tinubu has authorised funding for extensive repairs on the third Mainland Bridge’s two carriageways.
Umahi stated that she was happy with the continuing maintenance being done on the Third Mainland Bridge’s upper deck and that she expected the repairs to be finished and the bridge reopened for traffic by April.

“By the time we finish, it will be a classic reinstated bridge,” he declared.

He said next week, contractors will start working on the Third Mainland and Carter Bridges’ underdeck and lagoon portions.

He further mentioned that within a week, bidders for amenities on the Lagos-Ibadan Motorway will be invited to submit their offers.

The Minister emphasised the federal government’s dedication to safeguarding the shorelines of Lagos.

He said that restoring the shorelines is essential to preventing the threat that erosion poses to the state’s most important facilities.
