A tragic fire at an Islamic school in the Kaura-Namoda Local Government Area of Zamfara State has resulted in the deaths of 17 Almajiri students, with 16 others sustaining injuries. The fire broke out late Tuesday night and raged for approximately three hours.

According to local resident Abdulrasaq Kaura, the blaze was reportedly caused by stored sticks, locally known as “Kara.” The fire erupted in the study hall of Makaranta Mallam Ghali, where around 100 students were present. After evacuating the initial group, it was only upon returning that teachers discovered the horrific aftermath, finding some students burned beyond recognition.

The deceased have already been buried, with the community in mourning over the loss. The Chairman of Kaura-Namoda Local Government, Mannir Haidara, confirmed the incident but stated he was on his way to the scene for further details.

The Public Relations Officer for the Zamfara State Police Command, Yazid Abubakar, also confirmed that 17 students lost their lives in the fire, while 16 others are receiving medical treatment for their injuries.

This devastating incident has drawn attention to the safety conditions in such educational facilities, raising questions about fire prevention measures and the well-being of children in similar institutions across the region.

As the community comes to terms with this tragedy, authorities are expected to investigate the incident further, ensuring that such events do not recur in the future.
