A devastating tanker fire in Enugu State has resulted in the deaths of approximately 20 people, including three children. The incident occurred on Saturday along the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway, just two weeks after a similar accident in Niger State that left around 90 people dead, raising significant concerns about tanker safety and the frequency of such catastrophic events.

The fire broke out around 11 a.m. when the tanker lost control while descending a hilly section of the road. Eyewitnesses reported that the vehicle crashed into several cars ahead, spilling fuel and igniting a massive explosion. Sunday Ugwumba, a bus driver who witnessed the tragedy, described how the tanker failed, leading to a fire that engulfed all surrounding vehicles and their occupants.

Residents have attributed the accident to the poor condition of the road, noting that the single lane forces heavy trucks and regular vehicles to share the same space, thereby increasing the risk of accidents. One eyewitness urged the government to repair the road promptly to prevent further tragedies.

The incident has provoked outrage, with stakeholders calling for a comprehensive investigation into this and previous accidents to pinpoint the causes and prevent future disasters. Over 200 injured victims are currently receiving treatment at the Enugu State University Teaching Hospital, with some having been discharged after suffering minor burns, while others with severe injuries remain hospitalized.

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) confirmed that 18 people were killed in the fire and reported that a total of 31 individuals were involved in the crash. Olusegun Ogungbemide, the FRSC national spokesperson, stated that 13 motorists were rescued from the inferno, while 18 victims were burnt beyond recognition.

Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State, along with his transport commissioner and local police, participated in the rescue operation. The FRSC attributed the crash to brake failure, indicating that a total of 17 vehicles were involved in the incident.

In response to the tragedy, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu extended his condolences to the government and residents of Enugu State. He emphasized the importance of caution and adherence to safety measures, particularly for fuel tanker operators.
