A country where only a few can afford decent housing is not justified, everyone requires a safe place that offers security to live and that will help in improving the standard of living for most households.

Today, most states in the country are facing major challenges in the provision of safe and decent housing for the people. Especially cities that are developed, owning or renting a house is one of the challenges that most people face.

In Nigeria, affordable housing options are limited, even those that earn steady income are unable to buy or rent to own a house. For example, some government workers find it difficult to maintain the houses in which they live in.

Even on a rent to own basis, the interest on it still remains low, leading to high vacancy rate in some of the housing estates constructed under this scheme. If an individual cannot rent to own in this present day and time, it is a big problem to the country and this is to say that the poverty rate in the country is terribly high.

Look around, the structure of some houses in the country are not up to standards and most of them are government owned. Few are owned by individuals and the road network are not encouraging, the government needs to act fast on getting solutions to these issues.

Some structures in some areas are better than others, yet in the same city, some buildings cannot be compared to others.

Conclusively, looking towards building and improving homes that are safe, decent and sustainable, the need for stakeholders including local, state, federal governments, the private sector and civil society to work together is encouraged to make more head ways for the housing industry.

Cities must act to address housing affordability if they want to avoid bulk withdrawal of important workers and other talented individuals. Communities develop more only when the needs of all residents are met.

Housing costs cannot be over looked because a house cannot be considered “affordable” if it’s considered far from economic opportunities of a state or country.
