The Association of Waste Managers of Nigeria (AWAMN) has urged the Lagos State Government to create a more conducive environment for effective waste management.

During an interview, AWAMN President Olugbenga Adebola emphasized that successful waste management requires collaboration between the government and Private Sector Participants (PSPs). He highlighted the necessity for both parties to work together to address the challenges within the waste management value chain.

Adebola pointed out that establishing an effective waste management system involves more than just providing trucks for PSP owners. He noted that a clear agreement or Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the government and PSPs is crucial for fostering investment and ensuring financial viability.

He raised concerns regarding the mechanisms in place to guarantee that waste generators pay for disposal services, especially in economically disadvantaged areas. Adebola also questioned the agreements made with companies like Vision Scape Services (VSS) regarding waste management.

While expressing gratitude to the Lagos State Government for its commitment to providing compactor trucks to PSPs through a lease-to-own model, he cautioned that this solution addresses only a small portion of the broader waste management issues.

Adebola reiterated the need for a comprehensive approach to tackle the myriad challenges facing waste management in Lagos, stressing that professional insights are essential for identifying and implementing effective solutions.
