The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Barrister Nyesom Wike, declared his authority over land management in Abuja, emphasizing that he is actively addressing issues related to land grabbers. He made these comments during a Thanksgiving service organized by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ahoada East and West local government areas of Rivers State.
Wike expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the opportunity to serve in his administration, stating that without this role, he would not have gained insight into the complexities of Nigeria.
In response to accusations of being a land grabber himself, Wike firmly denied the claims. “Those who are grabbing land are the people I am dealing with. I am in charge of land in Abuja; how could I possibly grab what I oversee?” he stated.
He acknowledged the challenges of managing land in a capital territory, highlighting the diverse interests of Nigerians involved. Wike also criticized the notion that past inaction from previous governments would prevent current and future improvements. “The mere fact that no government was able to implement rules yesterday doesn’t mean that this government cannot do it today,” he asserted.
Wike reassured the public of his commitment to doing what is right, regardless of criticism or propaganda. “No matter the outcry, I will continue to act in the best interest of the people,” he said, dismissing any attempts at intimidation or blackmail.
Former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Chibudom Nwuche, praised President Tinubu for appointing Wike, asserting that the minister’s transformative efforts in Rivers State are evident in his current work in Abuja. Nwuche emphasized that Wike is dedicated to improving the capital city.
