The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has officially unveiled the Utako Farmer’s Market in Abuja, described as Nigeria’s first evergreen solar-powered market. The facility spans 3,000 square meters and includes 50 lock-up shops, 40 informal stalls, and seven warehouses.

During the unveiling, Wike highlighted the market as a significant step towards enhancing commercial infrastructure and economic growth within the Federal Capital Territory. Represented by the Minister of State for FCT, Dr. Mariya Mahmoud, Wike noted that this initiative reflects the Bola Tinubu administration’s commitment to creating opportunities for economic expansion and improving residents’ quality of life.

Wike praised the leadership of Ambassador Maureen Tamuno at Abuja Investments Company Limited for her role in driving economic growth and fostering strategic investments in the region. He emphasized that the market would serve as a vital link between producers and consumers, allowing farmers to sell directly to buyers and thereby reducing post-harvest losses and boosting rural incomes.

In her remarks, Tamuno commended Wike for his dedication to transforming Abuja into a world-class city. She stated that the project aligns with Sustainable Development Goal 11, focusing on sustainable urban growth that enhances living standards for residents.

The market is expected to support the food security efforts of the current administration, ensuring that farm produce reaches consumers efficiently. Goodwill messages from key stakeholders, including the Chairman of the Senate Committee on FCT, Senator David Jimkuta, reaffirmed the commitment to economic development in the nation’s capital.
