February 6, 2025 – Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Zulum, has expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the approval of ₦80 billion for the reconstruction and upgrade of Alau Dam. The dam collapsed on September 10, 2024, causing severe flooding in Maiduguri and parts of Jere Local Government Areas, affecting over one million people and destroying numerous properties.
In a statement from Zulum’s Special Adviser on Media, Dauda Iliya, the governor highlighted that the presidential approval represents a significant step toward rebuilding the dam, which is vital for the livelihoods of farmers and fishermen in the region.
Zulum remarked, “This decision is a blessing not just for farmers, fishermen, and others who depend on the dam for their livelihoods, but also for our efforts to revive agriculture, our key economic sector, as we recover from the destruction caused by Boko Haram insurgency.”
He emphasized that the reconstruction of the dam will help prevent future flooding, further stabilizing the already vulnerable community. Zulum also acknowledged President Tinubu’s compassionate visit to Maiduguri during the flooding disaster and the relief aid provided to affected families.
The governor assured Tinubu of Borno State’s continued support for his people-centered policies aimed at national development and economic growth in line with his Renewed Hope Agenda.
