Abuja, July 19th (Viewpoint Housing News) – Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria has been asked by the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Works and Housing, Mahmuda Mamman, to re-strategise and look for ways of addressing the challenge of building collapse in the country.
He said COREN is a government recognised regulatory body with the powers to inspect and control building standards in the country
He encouraged the council to live up to its expectation by proposing solutions to this issue.
“I urge you to strategise and hatch out a plan to stop this menace of building collapse. There should be no more cases of building collapse and this lousy situation be brought to a stop”, he stated.
He also directed the conduct of thorough checks, registrations, and mandatory monitoring of construction activities to ensure Nigerians live in well-built, solid buildings without any fear of building collapse, no matter the weather.
Meanwhile, the Institute of Appraisers and Cost Engineers has blamed frequent cases of building collapses and failed projects in the country on the penchant of promoters to cut costs without seeking professional advice.
The institute stated that hundreds of billions of naira have been lost to failed projects in Nigeria due to a lack of adequate project management input in qualitative and quantitative evaluations as regards cost estimation and control.
