A devastating fire broke out at the Rumuomasi Morning Market in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State on Tuesday night, causing extensive damage to goods and properties valued at millions of Naira.
Witnesses reported seeing many traders in distress as they watched their merchandise go up in flames. The fire reportedly started between 7:30 p.m. and 8 p.m., shortly after power was restored to the market.
Firefighters from both federal and state agencies, as well as personnel from nearby oil companies, struggled to access the main source of the fire but eventually managed to extinguish it. Policemen were also present to prevent looting during the chaos.
One affected trader, Mr. Anthony Chikere, a former chairman of the market, shared his experience. He was at home when he received news of the fire and estimated his losses at over ₦100 million. Chikere appealed for government assistance, emphasizing the severity of the situation.
Another victim, a widow named Nkiru Olisemeka, expressed her despair, stating that she had lost approximately ₦50 million worth of foodstuffs. She voiced concern about how she would support her four children who are in university, highlighting the personal toll the disaster has taken on her family.
The State Police Command’s spokesperson, Grace Orange-Koko, confirmed the incident and mentioned that an investigation is underway to determine the cause of the fire. The police were on-site to ensure order during the aftermath.
