A tragic building collapse in the Oyingbo area of Lagos has left one person dead and 26 others injured. Residents reported that the two-storey structure had shown visible signs of distress, yet occupants chose to remain inside. The incident occurred shortly after a heavy rainfall, raising concerns about the building’s integrity.
Emergency responders, including officials from the Lagos State Building Control Agency and the Red Cross, quickly arrived at the scene to conduct rescue operations. Eyewitnesses described hearing the cries of those trapped beneath the rubble, prompting immediate attempts to rescue them before help arrived.
One shop owner, Mrs. Adaeze, lamented the loss of her goods, valued in the millions, which were trapped under the collapsed structure. She revealed that the government had previously issued warnings to evacuate due to the building’s condition, but the owner had not complied.
Another resident, Habeeb Jamiu, noted that the building had displayed cracks and other distress signs, which were ignored by the occupants. As rescue efforts continued, concerns grew that more people might still be trapped inside.
The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service confirmed the ongoing rescue operations, stating that the building had been marked as distressed prior to its collapse. This incident adds to a disturbing trend in Lagos, where multiple building collapses have occurred in recent months, highlighting the urgent need for improved building regulations and enforcement in the region
