Gov. Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa state says the government will reconstruct the Tudun Amba bridge linking Lafia and Doma local government areas to check incessant flooding.
Sule gave the assurance in Lafia while assessing the damage caused by the flood in the area due to heavy rainfall.
According to the governor, the bridge is too narrow to accommodate the volume of water hence it is taken over by water.
He said that the flood was caused by indiscriminate refuse being dumped by residence of Lafia, which eventually blocked the narrow bridge.
”As part of measures to address the challenge, government will expand the bridge, dredge the river and build barriers along the canals leading to the river to stop wastes from flowing in,” Sule said.
He advised the people of the state to desist from indiscriminate wastes disposal to minimise flooding.
The governor said that the government recently reintroduced the monthly environmental sanitation to rid the state of wastes.
He said that the government had also initiated a reward and
sanction system in local governments as part of measure to ensure effective
environmental sanitation.
It could be recalled that the Tuesday flood caused by the early morning downpour prevented civil servants residing in Workers Village comprising 500 housing unit from going to work. NAN
