The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Barrister Nyesom Wike, has completed the final inspection of the newly upgraded Abuja International Conference Centre ahead of its official commissioning by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, scheduled for Tuesday. During the inspection, Wike revealed that the original contractors, Julius Berger, will retain responsibility for the facility’s maintenance under a user-pay system designed to address long-standing issues of poor infrastructure upkeep in Nigeria.

He emphasized that the new approach breaks away from the tradition of abandoning public projects or handing them over to political associates who lack the capacity to manage such assets. The minister noted that the maintenance strategy includes direct involvement of the contractor, a transparent payment framework, and routine technology upgrades to keep the facility modern and functional.

Addressing concerns about operational management, Wike reassured the public that Nigerian personnel have received extensive training over several months to ensure they are fully equipped to manage the high-tech systems at the Centre. He described the technology installed as accessible and user-friendly, not overly complex.

Wike attributed the successful completion of the project to three critical elements: a clear and consistent vision from President Tinubu, careful financial management, and close collaboration with the civil service. He underscored that effective leadership involves setting clear targets, working with capable individuals, and removing those who fail to perform.

He further expressed pride in the project, describing it as one of his most significant achievements, especially in light of Nigeria’s current economic challenges. The new conference centre, with a seating capacity of 10,000, boasts cutting-edge acoustic infrastructure, artificial intelligence-powered translation booths, and energy systems driven by renewable sources.
