A fire that started in a female hostel at the Ignatius Ajuru University of Education in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, on Sunday night destroyed valuables valued at millions of naira.
The whole dormitory was filled with panic as a result of the incident, which was started by a cooking stove that was ignited with gas that another student was using.
A student at the school alleges that the fire originated from a student’s kerosene stove, which she used to cook in her dorm, shortly before dusk on Sunday.
She continued that, the fire further aggravated when a nearby female student started cooking with gas, resulting in an explosion and further chaos.
It was learnt that although no lives were lost, many personal belongings and properties of female students were destroyed in the fire.
The Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof. Okey Onochukwu, confirmed that fire services from the Nigerian Navy and the Federal Fire Service arrived promptly and were able to extinguish the fire.
