The Lagos State Building Control Agency (LABSCA) has mandated the demolition of a Redeemed Christian Church of God parish in Somolu after a nearby construction site collapsed, partially damaging the church building. Fortunately, worshippers escaped harm during the incident.

Following the collapse, LABSCA issued notices requiring the church to vacate the premises and stating that the church had structural defects due to the incident. The demolition notice specified compliance within seven days, warning that failure to comply would result in forced demolition at the church’s expense.

Parish Pastor Daniel Ojo expressed concerns over the disruption to church activities, highlighting challenges in finding a temporary location for services in the industrial area of Somolu. He noted that the rapid construction next door raised alarms about safety standards.

A local trader recounted how construction workers narrowly escaped injury by fleeing from the top of the building just before it fell.

A representative from LABSCA confirmed the issuance of the demolition notice, citing the need to assess the damage after clearing the rubble of the collapsed structure.
